Protecting Human Life
Life is precious. Miraculous. Delicate. Created by a loving God who makes every human being unique. King David prayed: “You know me inside and out, you know every bone in my body; You know exactly how I was made, bit by bit, how I was sculpted from nothing into something. Like an open book, you watched me grow from conception to birth; all the stages of my life were spread out before you. The days of my life all prepared before I'd even lived one day” (Psalm 139:15-16 Message). God is the Author and Artist of human life.
Life should be protected. Defended. Rescued. Proverbs 24:11 says: “Rescue those who are unjustly sentenced to death; don't stand back and let them die.” The point is this: Life made in the image of God is a fundamental right. According to America’s Founding Document, The Declaration of Independence, “All men are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable rights. Among these are life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.”
Sadly, this right to life has been undermined in our “culture of death.” Consider the following:
- Abortion ends the lives of over 1.3 million unborn children in America every year, meaning one out of four pregnancies end in abortion. There have been over 40 Million pre-born babies terminated since abortion was legalized by the Supreme Court in the 1973 Roe v. Wade decision. Abortion is the American Holocaust.
- Human embryos are being harvested for the purpose of removing the stem cells for bio-medical research, but then they are discarded, ending even more human lives.
- The lives of aged, handicapped, and terminally ill Americans are potentially threatened by advocates of the “the right to die” movement--which will ultimately lead to euthanasia as it has in Europe.
We stand with those who value human life. We stand against those who would threaten human life by advocating abortion rights, stem cell harvesting from human embryos, euthanasia, etc.
What Can You Do About It?
In Tennessee, encourage your state congressmen to bring up SJR 127 (proposing a Constitutional amendment concerning abortion) for a vote. The Senate has already overwhelmingly passed their version, while the House version stayed bottled up in committee and the measure died. We missed a great opportunity. Now it will be 2010 before this measure can be voted on by Tennesseans, provided that we get it passed by the Senate and House in the upcoming legislative session.
